Great Weather Thursday, But Weekend Looking Unsettled Again

4/9:

1) Spring Thursday - a weak frontal boundary will slide through the region Thursday morning, shifting surface winds around to the west and southwest, pushing the cool marine layer out to sea and allowing milder air to move all the way to the coast. So after some morning clouds and possible sprinkles depart, the sun should emerge during midday and temperatures should rocket through the 50s and top out close to 60F as an average across the Cape. Computer generated MOS brings Hyannis to 62F Thursday afternoon and Falmouth to 63 to 66F!! It should be a bit cooler out near Chatham and right along the water where readings may hold in the upper 50s - still...the best weather we've seen since last fall. Enjoy it.

2) Rain Returns - clouds will increase during the day on Friday, with skies becoming overcast by late day. The increase in clouds will be in response to a frontal zone approaching from the south, connected to a strong spring storm over the nation's midsection. Showers will break out around the region Friday night and gradually transition to a steady, soaking rain during the day on Saturday as a wave of low pressure crosses Southern New England. A nice feed of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will ensure some localized downpours, and should help bring rainfall totals up to 1 to 1.5 inches once again. If you didn't do it last week, this represents another great opportunity to fertilize the lawn.

3) Remaining cool/unsettled - behind Saturday's storm, cooler air will spill back into the region and the jet stream will undergo a shift, featuring a large trough over the eastern third of the nation This trough will be centered right over the Northeast Sunday, Monday and possibly into Tuesday and will represent a pool of very cold air at upper levels of the atmosphere and cyclonic spin. This set up is favorable for maintaining clouds and day-time driven pop-up showers of rain (even sleet or snow Monday.) So while the brunt of the moisture will push offshore Saturday evening, the weather will take several days to improve thereafter with abundant clouds, chilly temperatures and scattered showers around the region. Highs are likely to hold in the 40s Sunday through Tuesday. This pattern may not break until later Tuesday or Wednesday, when westerly winds resume at all levels of the atmosphere and allow milder air to push eastward.
