Nice Today, But What's in Store for this Weekend?

THU 6/12: It doesn't get too much better than this. High pressure is building in from Canada today, providing us with nearly 100% sunshine, a gentle breeze, low humidity and near to slightly above normal temperatures. Pretty much picture-perfect weather. And the good news is, we'll get nearly a repeat performance on Friday with another day featuring highs in the mid 70s and plenty of sunshine. Can the nice weather last through the weekend?

Well, yes and no. Overall, the weekend is looking OK...perhaps 50/50. Not as nice as our current stretch of weather, but not terrible either. A frontal zone, associated with the same storm that's delivering deadly severe weather to the Plains and Midwest at the current time, will move into the Northeast on Saturday sending a shield of clouds and showers and thunderstorms along with it. However, as this system tries to march eastward, it will run into a block - the same high pressure cell building in from Canada today - slowing its forward progress and causing it to lose some steam.

For us here on Cape Cod, thats welcomed news as we are likely to squeeze out another dry and at least partly sunny, mild day on Saturday. It looks as though we will end up just far enough east of the front to escape its effects through the daylight hours. In fact, some of the nicer weather in the Northeast may be right here on the Cape as we manage the most sun. We should see highs well into the 70s, though a southwest wind ahead of the front will help tug at least some humidity back into the region, making it a touch more muggy.

The tougher part of the forecast comes Sunday, when the front finally moves through the area. There are hints that a small low pressure center may try and form along the boundary and scoot south of the Cape, enhancing cloud cover and perhaps allowing for a more concentrated area of showers during the morning and into midday. Should this come to fruition, the first half of the day may be a bit cool and unsettled, with sunshine developing later in the day. If this low center does not take shape, there would still be more clouds than sun and the threat for showers, but not as concentrated. Either way, Saturday looks to be the better of the two weekend days.

Looking out to next week, it looks as though a pattern shift is on the way, as a trough digs into the Great Lakes and Northeast and possibly lingers over the region for a good portion of the week. This is likely to spell near to slightly below normal temperatures and perhaps a few episodes of showers and thunderstorms from time to time...with the first few days of the week appearing to be the more unsettled stretch at the current time.
