Return of the River Herring
The Spring Migration Has Begun
Spring weather on Cape Cod is changeable and dreary much of the time; and the old adage "If you don't like the weather on Cape Cod, wait a minute" seems most appropriate this time of year. However, when that brief minute provides a perfectly clear sky and the temperature tops 60 degrees the only place to be is outdoors. One seemingly required ritual is a visit to the local herring run to see if the fish are in.

Cape Cod Trout
Some of New England's Best Fishing
It is hard to deny that the trout fishing on Cape Cod is nothing less than spectacular. Each spring as the waters of Cape Cod's ponds and lakes warm, trout fishing conditions become ideal. This fishing prime time coincides with MassWildlife's annual spring trout stocking of 35—40 bodies of water on Cape Cod with 4 different species of trout. These trout are raised at the Sandwich hatchery, which distributes trout and a small number of broodstock salmon across Southeastern Massachusetts. If you haven't been to the trout hatchery on Route 6A in Sandwich I would highly recommend it. Brook, rainbow, brown, and tiger (cross between a male brook and female brown) trout are stocked on a weekly basis throughout the early spring months. Of the 636,000 trout released statewide this spring, more than 100,000 will be stocked on Cape Cod alone.
