Storm Impacts

Friday May 9, 2008 06:37 AM

A late season coastal storm will push into the region today, lasting through tonight and into Saturday morning. The impacts:

Rainfall - A widespread 2" of rain is likely, with totals approaching 3" in some towns. Heavy rain will result in pockets of street and basement flooding. Heaviest rain should fall between 5PM and Midnight.

Wind - East winds will shift to the northeast and increase today. Gusts should reach 30 mph by day's end. Overnight northeast winds will shift to the north with sustained speeds approaching 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph likely, especially along the Outer Cape. Northerly winds gusting to 40 mph will continue through much of Saturday.

Beach Erosion - This system coincides with the last few astronomically high tides of the month and the strongest winds will likely peak at the time of high water (between midnight and 4AM). Beach erosion is expected on north and east facing shores, particularly the Outer Cape. Minor coastal flooding is possible in the typically vulnerable spots.
